How much does it suck when you accidentally delete a file that you really need? or when you leave a document you are working on and return later to find that someone else has deleted the whole folder?
It happens all too often, but you may just be in luck. I’m going to give you a few tips on how to recover deleted files from your hard drive.
Whether you will be able to retrieve your lost files, documents, emails, or photos depends on whether that data has physically been overwritten on your hard drive platters.
See, Microsoft Windows keeps a record of files on your hard disk and the space available, but that is more of a virtual representation than a real physical representation.
There are software tools that can bypass Windows and analyse the physical sectors on your hard disk to find previously deleted data.
The first thing you should do if you haven’t already, is check the Recycle Bin. I’m pretty sure most people understand how the Recycle Bin works, but just in case you don’t? Open up Windows Explorer or click the My Computer link in the Start Menu and click the UP folder icon to navigate to the Desktop. You should be able to see the Recycle Bin icon in that folder.
Have a look in the Recycle Bin before you do anything else to see if your document is able to be restored. That is the easiest method of recovery.
While I’m on the subject of easy recovery, it would be wise to run a basic Search on your hard drive in case your files were accidentally moved to another folder mistakenly. This can happen so easily with an accidental click and drag.
If it is not in the Recycle Bin and it was not accidentally moved to another folder then you need to start looking at using third party software.
ParetoLogic Data Recovery software has always been a leader in this market for recovering deleted files. It is very user friendly and supported by a major software company.
You can either choose to perform a quick scan or an advanced scan from the opening menu.
Selecting advanced scan gives you extra options so you can quickly search for either images, documents, or zip files without scanning for everything else.
Once your scan is complete you simply select the files you wish to recover and click “Recover”.
If the file you are looking for does not appear in the list of recoverable files then you may need to look at paying a data recovery company to analyse your hard drive. This is only recommended if the file you lost is extremely important as this can be quite expensive.
Hopefully that gives you a few tips on how to recover deleted files easily. Please feel free to leave a comment with any questions or queries you may have about this process.
